# AI in extensions

> Allow a Raycast extension to use your chosen Redcast model.

Redcast can answer a Raycast extension's **AI.ask** and **useAI** calls through your own configured AI route. This is separate from subscribing to Raycast's AI service.

## Enable deliberately

Enable AI and choose a working model, then enable extension AI in the extension settings. An extension must receive its own grant before it can make AI requests. The global feature switch does not automatically trust every installed extension.

When the extension asks, check which extension is requesting access. Its prompt and any content it supplies will go to the model route Redcast selects for extension AI. Calls can use your provider's paid allowance.

## What works

The runtime supports streamed `AI.ask`, cancellation, model selection and supported creativity options. `useAI` uses the same underlying bridge. Requests still depend on the capabilities of the selected model and provider.

An extension expecting a proprietary service beyond this bridge can still be incompatible. Consult [compatibility](/docs/extensions/compatibility) and test the specific command.

## Review access

Remove a grant or disable extension AI when you no longer want an extension to call models. Per-extension AI grants do not travel in a backup. Importing an extension list on another Mac therefore does not silently restore access to your model allowance.

## Usage and failures

Extension AI contributes reported usage to [AI Usage](/docs/ai/usage). If a call is refused, check the global AI switch, extension AI setting, that extension's grant and the provider connection. An expired key or exhausted model allowance remains a provider error; reinstalling the extension will not repair it.
