# Send to AI

> Start a question from a clipboard entry, file or dictation without copying it by hand.

With AI enabled, select an item in **Clipboard History**, **Search Files**, a file result in root search, or **Dictation History** and press **⌘J**. **Send to AI** opens Quick AI with that item ready for your question.

The action menu also offers **Send to AI Chat**, which starts a new conversation in the full window instead.

## What is attached

| Selected item | Prepared context |
| --- | --- |
| Short text | A quoted line in the composer |
| Longer text | A staged text file |
| Color | The color's hex value |
| Image or file | An attachment through the normal composer checks |
| Folder | Its path, quoted as text |
| Successful dictation | Its transcript |
| An Ask by Voice history entry | Its question |

A folder path is not the folder's contents. An agent with file tools can read it when permitted; plain chat cannot inspect arbitrary local files merely because a path was mentioned.

## Ask a specific question

After sending a clipboard entry to Quick AI, try “Rewrite this as a short reply.” After sending a file, ask “Summarize this and list the decisions.” Review the staged attachment before sending; choosing the action does not make an unsupported model accept it.

## When the action is missing

AI must be enabled. Failed dictations cannot be sent because they have no transcript yet; use [Retry](/docs/voice/history) first. Attachments that exceed the route's size or format limits show the same refusal as attaching them directly.
