# Quick AI

> Ask from the palette, use web search, and let a native agent answer.

Quick AI is the chat inside the launcher palette. It is useful for a short question without opening the full [AI Chat window](/docs/ai/workspace).

## Start a conversation

With AI enabled, type a question in the launcher and press **Tab**. The question starts a new conversation. You can also use the AI fallback below search results, or the configured Quick AI command.

Type follow-up messages in the palette's field and press **Return**. The header shows the model and reasoning choice. Its picker changes the model for subsequent messages.

Use **⌘K** for New Chat, Stop Response, Copy Last Response, Chat History, attachment actions and AI Settings. A reply can continue after the palette closes.

## Web search

**⌘K → Web Search** toggles the same setting used by the composer's tools menu. With a supported tool-calling API model, the chat can search and read returned pages. See [web search](/docs/ai/web-search) for engines and limits.

## Answer with an agent

In **Settings → AI → Agents → Quick AI answers with**, choose a native agent. New Quick AI conversations then use that agent's folder, instructions, skills, tools and permission rules on the chat's model. The agent's name appears above the chat.

**⌘K → Answer with** changes the choice for a conversation. ACP agents use the full AI Chat window instead of this Quick AI setting.

Use a simple task to confirm the agent is working in the right folder: “List the files at the top of this project and tell me which document introduces it.” The tool rows show what it read.

## Bring in context

- [Send to AI](/docs/ai/send-to-ai) opens Quick AI with a selected clipboard entry, file or dictation ready.
- **⌘K → Attach Note…** opens a note picker when Notes is enabled.
- Paste a supported file or image into the composer to stage it.
- Configure [Screen Awareness](/docs/ai/screen-awareness) to open captures in Quick AI.

An attachment is staged for a question; check it before you send. Text-file and image limits still apply, and a route that cannot accept an attachment refuses it.

## Continue and revisit

Open Chat History from ⌘K to find saved conversations. Empty conversations are not saved. For folders, branches, the settings sidebar and bulk organization, open AI Chat.

If the answer needs more work, ask a follow-up with a concrete change. If a native agent is still running, a new message can be queued; **Send Now (⌘Return)** steers it at its next step. For other routes Send Now stops the current reply and sends immediately.
